There are multiple ways to become involved:

Who Is Eligible to Join the VFW?

To qualify for VFW membership, an applicant must meet both of the following requirements:

Honorable Service

You must have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and received an Honorable discharge or General discharge under honorable conditions, or you must currently be serving.

Qualifying Service

You must also have served in a war, campaign or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters.

Eligibility may be established through qualifying campaign medals, receipt of hostile-fire or imminent-danger pay, or qualifying service in Korea.

Not sure whether you qualify? Review the complete national eligibility information or contact Post 10005. We will be glad to help you determine your eligibility and identify the documentation you may need.

Who Is Eligible to Join the VFW Auxiliary?

VFW Auxiliary members must be at least 16 years old.

You may qualify through a living or deceased veteran who is eligible for VFW membership if you are the veteran’s:

  • Spouse

  • Widow or widower

  • Parent

  • Grandparent

  • Child

  • Grandchild

  • Brother or sister

Stepchildren, stepparents, adopted family members and half-siblings may also qualify under national eligibility rules.

The qualifying veteran does not necessarily have to be a member of the VFW, but documentation establishing the veteran’s qualifying service and your relationship to the veteran may be required

How can I support?

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements — you still have several official ways to support the organization.

1. Support Through Advocacy or Partnerships
You can partner with the VFW on campaigns, sponsorships, or awareness initiatives, or advocate for veteran‑friendly policies in your community

2. Volunteer for Community or VFW Events
Even without membership, you can volunteer for community service projects or VFW‑sponsored events such as charity drives, youth programs, or fundraising activities. We welcome non‑members to help with these efforts.

3. Donate Goods or Vehicles
The VFW Foundation accepts vehicle donations, which are used to raise funds for veteran and military family programs. Other in‑kind donations (e.g., food, clothing, supplies) can also be arranged through your local post.

4. Make a Financial Donation
The VFW accepts monetary donations through its official website, mail, or by contacting your local post. Contributions help fund programs such as VA claims assistance, legislative advocacy, troop support, youth activities, and scholarships.
